Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.)

The degree of Ph. D. is the highest degree awarded by the University, and the standard of achievement is correspondingly rigorous: successful candidates must have completed a research project showing evidence of originality and have written an acceptable account of their work in the form of a thesis. The degree is ordinarily designed to be completed by full-time students in three years, and from the day they matriculate candidates work closely with their supervisor to meet this aim. While it is normally expected that candidates will complete their degree the University in that time, they may also be permitted work for part of the period outside A.L.U. where this is advantageous and therefore desirable for the completion of their research. Should Ph.D. candidates desire to enroll on a part-time basis, the average period of research is six years.

Normally, applicants will initially be admitted as candidates for the degree of Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) or Master of Theology (Th. M.) and, if their research progresses satisfactorily, they will be transferred to candidates for the degree of Ph. D. without any loss of time. However, applicants of outstanding ability may be admitted directly to the Ph. D. program.
